      <image:title>Work - Expanding the Project</image:title>
<image:caption>During the second year of the project, we switched the format to engage community members who might not otherwise meet. We took photos of the participants across the city, but instead of creating self-portraits, we exchanged the photographs with a stranger. Each participant wrote a little bit about themselves on the back of their photo to further the connection. Both exhibitions went on display in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and an exhibition opening was held in celebration of the community of artists. Many participants not only saw their portrait for the first time but also had a chance to meet the artist of their portrait at the opening.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A large-scale multimedia project celebrating eight remarkable people from Washington, D.C.’s Ward 7 and 8 through the lens of ArtReach students (ages 8-18), George Washington University’s photojournalism + new media graduate students and Corcoran College of Art + Design Alumni artists. The artwork uniquely examines these individual’s stories and explores the passion, energy and commitment found east of the river in our nation’s capital.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Community Portrait Exhibition</image:title>
<image:caption>Nearing the end of the project, the portraits were collected and put on display in the ArtReach gallery. At the opening, family and community members celebrated alongside the artists. The project participants were particularly excited for the event and unveiling because it was the first time the community influencers would see the portraits and the first opportunity for all artists to meet face-to-face. The opening celebration was, in itself, an inclusive and transformative experience with incredible community excitement and participation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Reflection - Building Collective Efficacy Through Asset-Based Programming</image:title>
<image:caption>The holistic project hosted opportunities to weave a fabric of the community through multiple levels of participation. Each person brought energy, curiosity and competencies to the art project, permitting it to evolve and grow. Each participant shared a profound and enriching experience through connection, collective pride, and interaction. The community based art education experience showcased citizens who have accomplished great things, and also helped students and the community at large understand that great things are possible.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Civic Engagement and Social Connectedness</image:title>
<image:caption>The broad purpose of the project was to introduce and connect community members, raise public awareness and social consciousness of local identity, uplift community’s self-image, nourish and enrich social capital, explore a variety of creative disciplines, share intergenerational stories and celebrate active and engaged citizenship.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Three stages of collaboration</image:title>
<image:caption>The portrait project began with listening. During the first phase, each community influencer was interviewed and photographed in an environment congruent to their passion. With a background of information, students participated in group discussions and brainstorming mixed media collaborative portrait making materials. At each meeting, the community influencers participated in a photo shoot where the volunteer photojournalism students photographed the portrait sitters in action. During the interview, the influencers shared their thoughts and experiences as a youth and as an adult in the community. They each articulated the challenges facing their community along with their aspirations for the neighborhood. Back at the studio, the photographs and interviews were shared with thirty ArtReach students who reflected on the portrait subjects, discussed the influencers’ contributions to the community, and collaborated on selecting relevant portrait materials. For the next three months, the students worked together to create multiple portraits depicting their sitters. As a third layer to the project, fourteen Corcoran alumni artists across a variety of art disciplines also participated by volunteering to create a portrait representation. Working from the same influencers’ information and in their medium of choice, the adult artists created work at their own studios in tandem with the ArtReach students.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When identifying assets within the community, inclusiveness and transparency are essential. By activating a democratic decision-making process, a variety of residents, local businesses, and organizations were contacted for candidate suggestions. The eight unique portrait subjects selected represented a wide variety of backgrounds, professions, hobbies, and interests. The selected influencers included: an Afro-folk singer, oral historian, urban farmer, local assemblage artist, professional skateboarder, founder of an independent activist radio station, a third-generation resident ANC outreach specialist for the Mayor, and Fredrick Douglas, a historical social reformer from the neighborhood and the only non-living portrait sitter. Each portrait subject represented an enthusiastic commitment to the community by providing their time, energy and genuine dedication to the enhancement and service of their neighborhood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A multi-year project working with residents of Ward 7 and 8 in Washington, DC to help build relationships, promote environmental civic engagement, and connect health and nutritional education through the arts. The public art projects, located at six urban garden sites, helped to revitalize underutilized communal outdoor spaces, promote healthy lifestyles, and engage residents by deepening their sense of place and connection within the community. Working with students and faculty from the Secondary Education program at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD), the Eleventh Street Bridge Park, University of Columbia’s Urban Agricultural Department, and Corcoran School of Art, Melissa designed creative garden space projects with three Ward 8 resident communities by providing a series of themed workshops exploring the neighborhood’s history, environmental sustainability and food justice.</image:caption>

In preparation for the collaborative garden portrait murals, ArtReach staff conducted interviews and conversations with the residents and neighboring veterans about gardens and personal relationships to fruits and vegetables. Working with the young adult residents, participants created four, eight-foot tall portraits of transitional housing residents depicting themselves with their vegetable and fruit associations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dreyvon selected to be portrayed picking an orange from a tree with the word “hope” painted above him. “Oranges are unique to me. And as far as the layers of the orange and everything, you go through the peel, which is all tangy and bitter, and you wouldn’t want to mess with that. Once you get inside to the sweet, good orange, you find out who they are. And I relate to that because sometimes I can come off a bit edgey at times. And, so does an orange. You can’t just bite through the peel. It will be nasty. So you’ve got to take your time and peel it back.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>A socially engaged printmaking project exploring themes from the Anacostia River watershed. Working with the National Park Service, Anacostia Watershed Society, Corcoran College Printmaking Department and Washington Area Bike Association, Melissa designed and hosted a series of educational and studio-based workshops in museums, schools, and community centers around DC to learn about watershed health and create native fish windsocks. The project, held annually for three years, created over four hundred screen printed windsocks depicting native species of the local river. Many of the windsocks were put into motion during the fish bike parade at the first Annual Anacostia River Festival in April.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The stories and questions surrounding the fish and their habitats helped create rich and valuable conversations during arts workshops. The educational workshops also helped introduce community members to local river advocates from multiple disciplines. Through partnerships with such environmental organizations as the District Department of Energy and Environment Aquatic Recreation Center (AREC), Earth Conservation Core, and the Anacostia Watershed Society, Melissa was able to provide local youth and families with opportunities to engage in environmental activities and learn about some of the work being done to combat environmental degradation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A multi-year project working with the Eleventh Street Bridge Park, University of Columbia’s Urban Agricultural department, and residents from Ward 7 and 8 in Washington, DC, to help build community relationships, promote civic engagement, and connect health and nutritional education through the arts. The public art projects, located at six urban garden sites, helped revitalize underutilized communal outdoor spaces, engage residents, and promote healthy lifestyles infused with nature. In preparation for the collaborative garden art projects held East of the River, ArtReach conducted a series of interviews and preparatory conversations with residents to gather information, interests and encourage participation. During the interviews residents discussed a lack of healthy food options in their neighborhood, a lack of interactive public space, and highlighted the benefit of the garden on the surrounding community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ArtReach was proud to partner with the 11th Street Bridge Park, Risa Fund, and Artolution in the summer of 2015 to create a unique mural connecting students from Ward 6, 7 and 8 in Washington, DC on a collaborative work of art that is representative of communities living on both sides of the Anacostia River. Participants, drawn from high school aged students on both sides of the river, were challenged to illustrate their vision of a “healthy city, community and neighborhood” as part of a collaborative mural project. Each workshop included discussions on how to illuminate the diverse values of each neighborhood, the arts and intercultural communication.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Lantern Walk</image:title>
<image:caption>The lantern walk was inspired by the story of African American families who built their home in historic neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River in Washington D.C. by candlelight after returning home from a long day’s work. In the mid 1860’s, Barry Farm and Hillsdale were developing communities with pioneering inhabitants. As a tribute to D.C. history, a series of lantern making workshops were held on both sides of the river. Participants learned about the area’s history while collaging historic photographs of the neighborhood, landmarks, and prominent residents from archived documents. To symbolize the journey, the homemade lanterns traveled to the 11th Street bridge on September 17, 2017 where over 300 people walked across the Anacostia River by lantern-light. The celebration, co-hosted by the Eleventh Street Bridge Park and Washington Performing Arts, united residents from across the river with music, food, and flickering light. Every bone created through this initiative generated a $1 donation to C.A.R.E. for their work on the ground in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over a weekend, students and staff took part in the collaborative installation of 1,000,000 bones on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The installation served as a collaborative site of conscience to remember victims and survivors, and a as a visible petition to raise awareness of the issue. Every bone created through this initiative generated a $1 donation to C.A.R.E. for their work on the ground in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One Million Bones was a large-scale social arts project, which used education and hands-on art making to raise awareness of genocides and atrocities going on around the world. Through a series of lectures with the founder, Naomi Natalle, and hand-building bone workshops, led by Melissa, the Corcoran faculty, students and staff created over 1,200 handmade ceramic and biodegradable paper bones that contributed to the One Million Bones collection.</image:caption>
